The Chilean Mine Disaster Rescue:  Shift Happened
October 16, 2010

I had planned to start a blog next year, but this week's dramatic rescue of the Chilean miners, who were trapped inside the mine for 69 days, compels me to begin it now. This most complex mine rescue in human history has significance for me personally, and I want to share my thoughts about it with you while they are uppermost in my mind.

Given the media's colossal power to shape public perception, I also want to record my comments on the event while media coverage of it remains positive. Newscasters, at least here in the U.S., have thus far been generous with their remarks on the hopeful, the joyous, and the miraculous aspects of the South American miners' rescue. And they haven't shied away from portraying the direct spiritual implications of it either: "I think about God more," one of the rescued miners told one journalist on today's news update.

But with book and movie deals on the table for the former miners, how the media will portray the various spinoffs of the event is anyone's guess. At this writing, 31 of the 33 rescued miners are enjoying their first day at home, while the remaining two rest in the hospital; and already one rescued miner has complained that the media have revealed too much about his personal life.

There are many transcendent facets of the Chilean miners' rescue that one might choose to discuss in a blog centering on metaphysics and spirituality: the courage of the miners, the wisdom and fortitude on the part of Chile's president, Sebastian Pinera, the support and cooperation shown by other nations, to name just a few.

(An entire book could be written on the immensely uplifting effects the rescue had on a disaster-weary humanity. To those of us here in the U.S. who watched in horror as the Hurricane Katrina and Gulf oil spill catastrophes unfolded, the Chilean miners' brilliant rescue was quite a shot in the arm.)

Decades ago, before I became a practicing psychic, I had a profound experience where my third eye opened and I saw human events unfold beyond 500 years into the future. One thing I saw in that experience was religion as we know it — the authoritarian, guilt-driven, pay-and-obey, blind-faith-based kind, tinged around its darker edges with a long history of wars, murder, torture, rape, corruption, secrecy, coverups and greed for power and money — morphing into genuine spirituality.

This spirituality of the future that I glimpsed was fueled not by any particular belief system but by a common "grassroots" spiritual understanding. Grounded in this understanding, all people, without exception, worked together toward one stupendous common goal: that of transforming this troubled planet into a place where peace, love, joy, sharing, creativity, meaningful work and scientific knowledge prevailed.

Over the years that followed this experience of mine, some of the things I saw came to pass. Others apparently lie ahead, and in future blog entries, I may share some of these with you. But I want to stay on the miners' rescue, because what transpired in Chile this week to me represents the birth of this "new spirituality" I saw.

Worldwide, all eyes this week were on this "most watched" event. It's true that sporting events have drawn larger audiences on more than one occasion. But never before in human history have so many people witnessed an event while praying for, hoping for or rooting for the same desired outcome.

As I see it, humanity's nascent awareness of itself as a dynamic spiritual entity quickened this week. Despite the strife and struggle that will continue to plague humanity for some time to come, the new spirituality has been born, and there will be no turning back.
